TPE 6: Developing as a Professional Educator
In the 2017-2018 school year, I attended three professional development conferences: Rigorous PBL, CTA Good Teaching Conference, NGSS Phenomena-Based Learning Conference Series. See below for more details on those conferences.
Professional Development: Teaching Conferences
Rigorous PBL
3-Day Conference (2017)
At this conference, Michael McDowell presented information regarding designing projects that move students from surface to deep and transfer learning through PBL. By creating instruction that allows students to move between these three levels, students will become more confident and competent learners. Michael emphasized three major takeaways:
Clarity: Students should be clear on what they are expected to learn, where they are in the learning process, and what next steps they need to take to get to where they want to be.
Challenge: Help students move from surface to deep and transfer learning.
Culture: Empower them to use that knowledge to make a difference in theirs and the lives of others.
CTA Good Teaching Conference
3-Day Weekend Conference (2018)
At this conference, I attended several workshops:
Developing a Growth Mindset
Literacy in Secondary Science
Inquiry-Based Learning for Secondary Classrooms
25 Ways to Digitize Your Classroom
Easy and Exciting Science Experiments
Next Generation Science Standards
5-Day Conference Series (2017-2018 School Year)
At this active, hands-on series I engaged with the following:
Experienced phenomena-based NGSS lessons and received associated materials kits for immediate application in my own classroom
Examined select NGSS practices and considered their implications for classroom instruction
Explored conceptual shifts of the NGSS and connections to California ELA and Math CCSS
Discovered literacy techniques that engage students in scientific discourse, reading, and writing as they make meaning of the concepts and phenomena under investigation
Learned about tools and strategies for adapting and designing lessons
Collaborated with regional colleagues
